1985年，词曲作者、歌手和主吉他手John Rzeznik与玩重金属乐的表哥Robby Takac找来George Tutuska（鼓手），在美国纽约州水牛城组成了Goo Goo Dolls。乐队在他们的前五张专辑中，基本上是地下摇滚的气质，专心玩自己喜爱的音乐，可是老天似乎想他们成名，1999年热门电影《City Of Angels（天使之城）》的制片人不知怎么喜欢上他们，邀请他们为其原声带写作歌曲（其实没在电影里出现），John也鬼使神差的谱写了一首十分抒情的《Iris》（希腊文，彩虹女神的名字，我因为喜欢这个名字在网上搜索才意外的找到这首歌-_-bbb ），从此不可收拾，不仅为他们拿到1999年第41届葛莱美音乐奖“年度唱片”“最佳流行演唱团体”“年度歌曲”等三项大奖提名，歌曲的制作人Rob Cavallo更以此获得“年度最佳制作”大奖。Goo Goo Dolls凭此完成了“地上化”，正式确立了“独具沧桑意境的Pop Rock”的品牌。

摇滚界的历史证明，重金属、朋克大牛们偶尔玩一把Pop一般都会成功的一塌糊涂，到了90年代，基本上每张Metal和Punk专辑中都会有几首旋律优美的单曲，用上海的孙孟晋的话讲叫做“专供打上排行榜用”的作品。但是我认为《Iris》更胜一筹，清脆急促的吉他solo，John Rzeznik饱含沧桑的低沉嗓音（嗯，这个是GGD最吸引我的地方）对世事、爱情满腹的疑问，后面的爆发，“And I don’t want the world to see me, ‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand. When everything’s made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am!” 这是有着无穷韵味的箴言。

GGD还有不少hard rock风格的佳作，我最喜欢的是《Here Is Gone》和《Naked》，没什么，虽然一般来说我鄙视甜腻腻的旋律（称之为“小精灵音乐”），但是John的嗓子能够改变这旋律中的脆弱，再说了，偶尔甜腻腻一下也不错 :D
