Google Chrome OS

Happy Another Xmas!

Google Becomes…

We have Google OpenSocial… and now we have gPhone -> OHA(Open Handset Alliance), with core tech of a whole new Linux-based mobile Platform/OS, Android. (Oh shit, all these links need p**xy to access!)

About Google Open Social

Google Bookmarks & Mood Ring

呃。。。 。。新的Google Toolbar。

Google Good Google Bad

What’s Good

Google Maps

Image Display in Firefox

The maps aren’t appearing and I’m not using Microsoft Internet Explorer. How can I see them?

Reconfiguring the way your browser handles JavaScript may resolve this problem. If you’re using Mac OS X or Windows with Mozilla Firefox 0.8+, Mozilla 1.4+, or Netscape 7.1+, just follow these steps:

1. Type “about:config” (without quotes) in the browser’s address bar.
2. Type “image” (without quotes) in the Filter field.
3. Verify that “dom.disable_image_src_set” is set to FALSE.
4. Verify that “network.image.imageBehavior” is set to 0 (the default setting).

Please note that “network.image.imageBehavior” may appear as “permissions.default.image” for some browsers.

If you continue to experience difficulties, you may want to uninstall any programs or extensions that change the way your browser handles JavaScript. Other users have reported that these programs may affect one’s ability to view the map display.

Slashback: OpenOffice, SuitSat, Google Books

Math Model Rules!

Boing Boing: Google Accelerator is bad news for Web apps

The accelerator scours a page and prefetches the content behind each link. This gives the illusion of pages loading faster (since they’ve already been pre-loaded behind the scenes). Here’s the problem: Google is essentially clicking every link on the page — including links like “delete this” or “cancel that.” And to make matters worse, Google ignores the Javascript confirmations. So, if you have a “Are you sure you want to delete this?” Javascript confirmation behind that “delete” link, Google ignores it and performs the action anyway.

Yes, sounds weird, the GWA.

The application is currently built against the Pocket PC 2003 SDK (this may change) and the executable is 3.8 megabytes at the moment. It requires about 5 megabytes of memory to display the Google homepage.

The brave can try compiling Minimo for Windows CE; the slightly less brave can download a precompiled Minimo zip build, which is described as “basically the second build that… actually rendered a page successfully.”

Windows CE developers are invited to help contribute to the port, particularly in the areas of Windows integration and the user interface. The relevant tracking bug is bug 277211.

QA != Testing

From TFA:

QA is described as making sure a project is “measurably meeting expectations and conforming to requirements”

At my job, requirements are often one-sentence requests with no needed detail whatsoever. If it then doesn’t go to a business analyst in the IT department, that’s what the programmers work from. When the QA process starts, it makes it easy to say that you’ve complied with all details of the requirements.

Symantec Antivirus May Execute Virus Code

Symantec has admitted that a serious vulnerability exists in the way its scanning engine handles Ultimate Packer for Executables. According to a ZDNet article, this means the scanner would execute the malicious program instead of catching it. Tim Hartman, senior technical director for Symantec Asia Pacific, said: “A vulnerability is not a vulnerability till somebody discovers it but because this is now known, somebody could craft an e-mail, mass mailer or a virus that takes advantage of it. It affects our firewalls, antispam, all the retail products and the enterprise products as well.” Symantec recommends you immediately patch your software.

An evening with Googles Marissa Mayer (
A lucky guy was invited to a lecture by Marissa Mayer, the product manager for Google. Here are some of the interesting things:

  1. The prime reason the Google home page is so bare is due to the fact that the founders didn’t know HTML and just wanted a quick interface. Infact it was noted that the submit button was a long time coming and hitting the RETURN key was the only way to burst Google into life.
  2. Due to the sparseness of the homepage, in early user tests they noted people just sitting looking at the screen. After a minute of nothingness, the tester intervened and asked ‘Whats up?’ to which they replied "We are waiting for the rest of it". To solve that particular problem the Google Copyright message was inserted to act as a crude end of page marker.
  3. One of the biggest leap in search usage came about when they introduced their much improved spell checker giving birth to the "Did you mean…" feature. This instantly doubled their traffic, but they had some interesting discussions on how best to place that information, as most people simply tuned that out. But they discovered the placement at the bottom of the results was the most effective area.
  4. The infamous "I feel lucky" is nearly never used. However, in trials it was found that removing it would somehow reduce the Google experience. Users wanted it kept. It was a comfort button.
  5. Orkut is very popular in Brazil. Orkut was the brainchild of a very intelligent Google engineer who was pretty much given free reign to run with it, without having to go through the normal Google UI procedures, hence the reason it doesn’t look or feel like a Google application. They are looking at improving Orkut to cope with the loads it places on the system.
  6. Google makes changes small-and-often. They will sometimes trial a particular feature with a set of users from a given network subnet; for example Excite@Home users often get to see new features. They aren’t told of this, just presented with the new UI and observed how they use it.
  7. Google has the largest network of translators in the world

Deprecate javac in favour of the Java 5 “apt” tool?

5.0 has a new tool “apt” which is a better javac. It allows us (mere mortals) to run our own code inside the compiler which can …
* examine the source being compiled (via mirror API – similar to reflection or javadoc API)
* generate other code (sourcecode which will then be compiled, as well as bytecode if you have the inclination),
* and generate compiler errors if we detect something out of spec.

EJB 3, the New JavaBeans?

JavaBeans components are:

  • easy to write and easy to change
  • object oriented
  • somewhat self-documenting
  • sufficiently general – the component model does not really assume much about the nature of the bean container, nor about the purpose of the component
  • fine grained
  • executable completely outside any container

…EJB 3 component model as an enhancement to JavaBeans: JavaBeans with “extra” semantics, defined by the spec’s general-purpose annotations.

Java is not the last language — although it may be Scott McNealy’s last language.

Geeks vs. Nerds

Definitions of Geek on the Web

A person who may be very smart yet lacks the social graces of those who are considered cool , a “computer geek” is someone who spends too much time on the computer and has no social life.

A person more comfortable with computers than with other persons.

Definitions of Nerd on the Web

Someone so unfortunate as to believe that all conversations might productively revolve around computing and IT issues. Interestingly, only a nerd might know that the word derives from the 1950 Dr. Seuss book ‘If I Ran the Zoo’ from which: “And then, just to show them, I’ll sail to Ka-Troo – And Bring Back an It-Kutch, a Preep and a Proo – A Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker, too!” See Geek.

A nerd is very similar to a geek, but with more RAM and a faster modem. Nerds often find geeks dull because geeks don’t spend enough time talking about computers.
